Evaluation Process

Letters and Comments

The National Writing Board provides a unique independent assessment service for the history research papers of high school students. We have evaluated papers from 31 states and two Canadian provinces. Two senior secondary instructors review the paper, and a three- or four-page report is sent to the author, who may then decide which college admissions officers should receive it to add to the information they now have with which to evaluate an applicant. We have mailed our reports, at the request of the authors, to 80 college Deans of Admission.

These papers are evaluated within twelve weeks against an independent academic expository writing standard developed by The Concord Review, since 1987 the only quarterly journal in the world for the academic work of high school students of history writing in English. E-mail any questions to Will Fitzhugh at fitzhugh@tcr.org.

Our assessment service has been endorsed by the following 39 colleges: Amherst, Boston University, Bowdoin, Carnegie Mellon, Claremont McKenna, Colgate, Connecticut College, Cooper Union, Dartmouth, Duke, Eckerd, Emory, George Mason, Georgetown, Hamilton, Harvard, Haverford, Illinois Wesleyan, Lafayette, Lehigh, Michigan, Middlebury, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Pitzer, Princeton, Reed, Richmond, Sarah Lawrence, Shimer, Smith, Spelman, Stanford, Trinity (CT), Tufts, the University of Virginia, Washington and Lee, Williams, and Yale.
